The Rowan Society

Kala Ambrose is the Director of the Rowan Society.  Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about The Rowan Society (TRS) and what they research.

Myth and Folklore About the Rowan Tree

According to legends, the Rowan Tree’s mythic roots go back to ancient times. It is said that the Rowan tree increases psychic abilities and communication with the spirit realms as well as assisting with discernment in understanding which spirits mean well and which are threatening. It was also valued as a protection against enchantment, unwanted influences and evil spirits. The Rowan Tree is reportedly associated with protection, healing, courage and psychic powers.

In Norse mythology, the Rowan is reported to have saved the life of the god Thor by bending over a fast flowing river in the Underworld and helping him back to the shore. In addition, Rowan sticks were used to carved runes. In the ogham letters, Rowan is a derivitive from the second letter, luis. It means a quickening of energy which drops the veils between the planes.

Greek mythology tells of how a godess was feeding the gods ambrosia from her chalice. When the chalice was stolen by demons, the gods sent a magic eagle to retrive the cup. The eagle was injured in the fight and lost some feathers and blood which dripped down to the earth where they turned into Rowan trees. It is said this is how the shape of the rowan leaves and berries were created.

In Celtic lore, the Druids were said to light fires made of Rowan wood to chant incantations which summoned spirits to help in rituals. In addition, the Druids made special beds with the wood, which upon sleeping on them, led them into psychic trances. The physical characteristics of the tree (the tiny five pointed star on each berry opposite its stalk) led to its reputation of being an instrument of protection, along with the color red which in Celtic time was deemed to be the best color to ward against dark enchantments. In addition, the white flowers which bloom from the tree represent the goddess energy. To this day, in some regions, a Rowan tree growing on a property will not be removed, so strong is the belief of its ability to protect people and the property on which it grows.

TRS has adopted the Rowan Tree as its symbol. It is our hope that the Rowan Tree will share its protective and intuitive qualities with us, as we journey to understand more about the spirit realms.
